James E Holshouser Jr of Boone said Saturday the party will set a vote quota for each of the state's 2 181 precincts in the November election These are going to be realistic goals we aren't asking you to meet a quota that has not already been achieved in most precincts.
Gov Dan Moore told the North Carolina District Solicitors conference that the Ku Klux Klan and militant black power groups are in the same bad shape if they tolerate lawless acts. He cited arrests resisted by troopers and a Pamlico County shooting, urging tighter law enforcement and teamwork.
Tropical storm Dorothy formed in the Atlantic about 1 200 miles east of Bermuda. Winds near the center were estimated at 50 to 60 mph with gales extending 200 miles and up to 300 miles in the northern semicircle. Dorothy was expected to move west slowly with a slight increase in intensity. Center at 5 p.m. EST was near 32.8 N 42.6 W.

Federal spokesman reported no progress toward settling the 16 day old airline strike. Union and management negotiators blamed each other for the impasse as 35 000 IAM mechanics walk out crippling 60 percent of U S air traffic and piling up losses daily. Negotiators to reconvene at 2 p m Sunday.

Frances Lewine reports Luci Johnson, the President’s daughter, will wed Patrick J. Nugent on August 6 at the Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington.
