Demand Laws To Stop Profiteering In War Contracts
The House naval committee urged laws to curb profiteering by a small group of contractors amid a year long inquiry. It cited 95 percent honest work but 5 percent profiting huge margins, up to 1768.22 percent. The study covered 39 405 contracts totaling 4.599 billion dollars, with average profits 8.1 percent of cost. The panel praised overall efficiency, noted voluntary profit reductions, and projected potential savings in renegotiations. It detailed a 360 percent rise in ship construction and a growing air arm, as 3,230 naval ships were under way by June 30 1942 versus 697 a year earlier.
