Overbuying and Withholding Blamed in Canning Lid Shortages
Consumer representatives told a House subcommittee that overbuying by home canners and withholding by manufacturers, distributors, or retailers contribute to lid shortages. Virginia Knauer cited increased demand from new gardens and hoarding, while Ellen Haas blamed industry monopolies. Commerce says over two billion lids will be made this year.
