Heavy North Vietnamese fire over three weeks killed 61 Americans and wounded 345 as U S troops evacuated Fire Base Ripcord near the Laos border. Command reports 12 killed and 51 wounded on a nearby patrol, with a Chinook shot down but no casualties.
In Athens AP reports the hijacked Olympic Airways Boeing 727 landed in Cairo and the plane with its crew and 47 passengers was returned to Athens. Seven Arab hijackers, five men and a girl, were promised freedom in Greece after authorities freed two Arabs accused in an airline office bombing and five others serving terms for two airline attacks. The seven would be turned over to the International Red Cross after the trial of the two accused murderers proceeds. The hijacking began after the Beirut departure for Athens and Rome with negotiations including offers from Aristotle Onassis.
Washington AP Secretary of Defense Melvin R. Laird told about 550 government interns that draft calls for the rest of 1970 will average below 10 000 a month, a return to pre Vietnam levels. He reiterated a year total forecast between 150 000 and 170 000 compared with 290 000 drafted in 1969. Through August draft calls reached 124 500.
U S sources report a Soviet cargo landed in Libya including T54 and T55 tanks and military gear. The shipment suggests Libyan leaders may turn to Moscow for army equipment as Egypt Syria Algeria Yemen and others already receive Soviet aid amid North Africa upheaval.
The Federal Trade Commission bans vague bulb claims and requires labeling of average output and life for incandescent bulbs. Manufacturers must provide cost savings and other performance data to allow fair comparisons and disclose lumen figures as a standard. The rule takes effect January 25 and excludes fluorescent lamps.

Police nabbed 37 year old Milton Niport at Miami International Airport after a midnight stakeout. He is charged with the murders of Delores Palacino and Judy Lamb, found shot to death near Coral Gables following a Western Union robbery. A third victim, Bruce Reitz, survived after being shot twice.
