General MacArthur says a new phase in the Korean War could signal a turning point with more American troops on the line and increased firepower to blunt Communist columns. He cautions ups and downs remain possible while a secure base develops in southern Korea.
The Census Bureau estimated the 1950 U S population at 150,520,000, nearly 19 million more than 1940. The release includes state totals and notes potential House seat shifts, with California the largest gain and several states likely to lose seats. Final figures due by December 1 will determine congressional representation.
Washington reports that some Air Force reserve units and Air National Guard units are expected to be called to active duty soon, likely Monday. Details are scarce, with a Monday statement promised. current calls to active duty already affect volunteers with usable skills and total reserves number about 104,500 officers and men.
The Bureau of Agricultural Economics reports ample civilian food stocks and no price spikes likely this year. It notes employment gains from defense programs could boost purchases, and warns against hoarding. Even with altered military buying, civilian supplies would not be noticeably affected.

More than 100 Madison county citizens gathered in Marshall to demand the resignation of School Superintendent Mrs Edna G Rhodes and Board Chairman J Clyde Brown along with other board members. They seek non partisan elections for the board and call for state legislation to authorize such elections. The group also urges a probe into the veterans farm training program and teacher qualifications. Harold Worley was elected committee chair and James Wallin Jr. named secretary.
The Defense Department announced lists Nos. 35 and 36 showing six killed in action 37 wounded two injured and 121 missing in action in two casualty lists. Among those listed as missing in action is Pfe. Randal L. Atkinson Jr of Greensboro North Carolina, son of Edna K. Atkinson and brother of Margie Walker.
Ottawa reports former prime minister William Lyon Mackenzie King died at Kingsmere summer home at 75. He suffered hypostatic pneumonia after a period of acute pulmonary edema and unconsciousness. King resigned in 1948 after long service, noted for strengthening Canada US relations during World War II under FDR.
North Korean forces recaptured Yongdok and pressed on the front as U S and South Korean troops held new positions. MacArthur cited increased Red pressure near Hamchang and Taejon with allied reinforcements. Navy air power and a 27000 ton carrier arrived, while Quemoy and other Formosa invasion concerns escalated amid mounting East Asia tensions.
American forces moved into positions along the Taejon Yongdong road amid new artillery from elevated hills southeast of Taejon. They sprayed roads and valleys to harry North Korean infantry and tanks thought readying for a renewed attack near Taejon.
Pvt. Reuben K. Kimball of Baytown Texas shot a North Korean sniper dead on a burning Taejon street and helped his jeep convoy flee. AWOL from a rear area, he and two Texas buddies drove to the front to rejoin their outfit, aiding a group of newsmen including Denis Warner and Time Life’s Wilson Fielder Jr.
Navy carrier aircraft pounded targets near Kaesong and Sariwon area destroying a railway bridge and damaging another. They also hit oil facilities, power stations and locomotives, and struck Inchan near Seoul. One naval pilot was reported lost in the day’s four strikes.
