Raleigh officials say the State Board of Conservation and Development will meet in Morehead City for a three day session starting Sunday. Director George Ross announced discussions will focus on preserving 18,000,000 acres of forest and developing ports and inland waterways.
Southern Bell workers won wage increases and the company petitioned the North Carolina State Utilities Commission to approve a new rate schedule. The plan would lift most residential charges by 15 to 25 cents per month and many business rates by 25 cents monthly.
Prisons Director Walter Anderson said four inmates from the Lincoln County prison camp received isolation terms. George Gibby of Andrews and Cecil Hamilton of Durham got six months each, Milton Austen of Gastonia four months, and William Dill of Tarboro two months.
Greensboro reports the 22nd annual H Club Week began at A and T College with a general assembly of more than 600 boys and girls from 48 Tar Heel counties. Delegates then split into groups for lectures on diverse topics.
Raleigh reporting a youth in Central Prison treated for shotgun wounds after an escape attempt at a Halifax County prison camp road gang. Harvey Arnette Jr., 19, of Fayetteville wounded. companion Laucie Taylor Jr., 23, of Greenville fled as gunfire broke out.

Whiteville report says Thomas L. Hamilton the imperial wizard of the Ku Klux Klan pleaded guilty to flogging charges in Columbus County Superior Court during a special term. Attorney 8 Bunn Frink of Southport announced the plea on the second day of court.
Eisenhower and Nixon plan a weekend campaign discussion at Eisenhower’s Colorado ranch near Fraser. Nixon will fly from Washington to Denver and then travel to the ranch to meet with key aides and discuss fall strategy. Duff predicts a Democratic defeat, touting their ticket as a change voters want.

J D Wilson State Prisons official identified James Turner alias Tom Williams 38 as the fugitive sought since 1933 for escape from a road gang. Turner convicted in Chatham County last month of a morals charge to six months and earlier sentenced in Wake County in 1931 to 57 years for highway robbery.
