Lawrence Kansas AP reports an 18 year old youth Harry Nicholas Rice of Leawood Kan was shot to death amid ongoing confrontations between city police and about 150 young residents near the University of Kansas campus. Graduate student Merton R Olds 25 of Topeka was wounded mildly and Officer Don Papier was struck on the right cheekbone. The clashes follow a year of sporadic confrontations sparked by a prior fatal shooting of Rick Dowdell 19 a Negro student at the university in the city's Negro section. Patrolman William Garrett was relieved pending a coroner's inquest into Dowdell s death and Patrolman Eugene Williams was wounded Friday by a sniper.
Tropical storm Becky intensified into a hurricane and moved toward the Florida panhandle with 75 mph winds. Warnings extended from Fort Walton Beach to Port St. Joe and gale alerts from Mobile to St. Marks. The storm covered a 20 to 30 mile wide wind field and was forecast to bend east and hit the coast Wednesday forenoon. Dr. Robert Simpson of the National Hurricane Center cautioned that any hurricane is dangerous and urged residents to heed warnings.
In Miami a gunman killed two women hostages and wounded Bruce Reitz, 39, after a $2,000 robbery at a Western Union office. Reitz described the attacker as dark complexioned, 35 to 40, who forced them into a car, to a distant field, and opened fire after removing Reitz’s rings.
The South Vietnamese government will dismantle the Con Son Island tiger cages and replace them with new disciplinary cells. About 9,000 prisoners are held there, including several hundred in cages. The move follows international criticism sparked by U S congressmen who toured the prison.
HEW Secretary Elliott Richardson presented the administration’s revamped welfare plan to the Senate Finance Committee as critics led by Chairman Long called it costly and inadequate. Police found Laurie Murninghan pretty 16 near Lansing in Ingham County after a 12 day search. She was abducted July 9 from a gift shop during a $64 robbery and killed. FBI involvement offered no usable leads.
The government reports consumer prices rose four-tenths of one per cent in June marking a slower inflation pace. Food housing clothing transportation medical care and recreation costs remained about six per cent higher than a year earlier with average weekly pay up 65 cents to 20.05 for 45 million workers.
