Negro Burns School Favors Integration in Oklahoma
Okemah Oklahoma July 20 a 64 year old Negro deacon Fli Watkins was charged with second degree arson in Oklahoma s first flare up since a Supreme Court school desegregation mandate. He allegedly burned a three room Negro school near his farm home to oppose integration while stating he wanted Negro children integrated if they wish. Officials say this marks the first criminal act attributed to the integration movement in the state. The school also served as a Baptist church meeting place for about 60 members.
