On July 21, 1861 near a small stream in northeast Virginia the Battle of Bull Run began at 10 a.m. Federals pressed the Confederates to a crest until T. J. Jackson earned the nickname Stonewall after holding a fighting brigade. By 3 p.m. Confederates counterattacked driving Federals from the field. About 40,000 men fought with 2,890 Federal and 2,000 Confederate casualties.
