Reports of food shortages in Burke Wilkes and surrounding counties prompt requests for federal aid. War Department report under consideration for conditions by district engineer as communities rush aid by sending food and supplies amid poor roads and limited communications.
July 21 Hickory reports Collettsville and Mortimer cut off from Hickory due to floods. In Mortimer families share two scarce rations daily and fear one per day next week without relief. Collettsville buried in mud with tracks blocked. rescue ferry service being organized across the Catawba from Glen Alpine to Malisbury amid continuing rains.
Asheville reports severe food shortages after Sunday's floods devastate Wilkes, Watauga, and Alexander counties. Federal aid requested by Morganton and Wilkesboro as towns face famine with potatoes sole sustenance amid extensive property damage and a rising death toll of about 80 to 90.
Major Duncan C. Waddell a famous Confederate soldier known for carrying the flag at Gettysburg died in Greensboro after several weeks illness at his home of cancer.
Unsettled conditions continue tonight and Saturday with likely showers. Moderate south and southwest winds expected as the system moves through the area.
At the national Prohibition convention in St Paul Indiana former governor J Frank Hanley was named as a presidential candidate. Nominations also included Finley C Henderson William Sulzer and Dr James C Mason as possible candidates as speeches continued after platform adoption.
In Raleigh on July 21 Chapel Hill swept both the hand reel and grab reel events at the state firmen's tournament with times of 22 15 and 17 for the two races. Spencer shop team took second in the hand reel with 23 2-5 seconds and Concord finished third in 24 seconds. In the grab reel Concord was second at 17 1-5 seconds and East Spencer placed third at 22 seconds. The inter-state hose wagon race the booby horse hose wagon race and the annual ball tonight close the tournament and convention.
The site department in Washington received from Austria-Hungary via Ambassador Penfield a request for more details on the Austrian submarine attack on the tankship Extralite. It remains unclear if Vienna plans to apologize, punish the submarine's commander, or provide reparations for the damage.
Political figure Joseph G. Cannon will tour North Carolina with speeches in Charlotte and Greensboro on Saturday July 29. He plans a one day visit to Guilford College and the Guilford County area to recall his boyhood scenes, staying over Sunday as J Elwood Cox hosts the trip.

George W. Litz of Columbus and assistant to the president of W. M. Ritter Lumber Co. died in Gastonia hospital after internal injuries from a collision near Collettsville nine days earlier. He was 16 years with the Ritter firm and was active in Columbus clubs. His body was moved to Tazewell, Virginia for burial.
The tropical disturbance off the North Carolina coast moved northward and approached the central New England coast. Rains accompanied the storm along the coast while the middle Atlantic states expect generally fair weather with potential thunder showers tomorrow.
The funeral for O F Lewis who died suddenly at his Tomlinson Street home will be Sunday at 3:30 pm from Frigands church. He leaves a wife and six sons, aged 10 to 20, and was employed at Snow Leader company. Members of three orders will participate, pallbearers named from Juniors, Daughters of Liberty, and Patriotic Sons of America.
Mrs Charlotte J Hunt died at 507 Elm Street yesterday at noon after more than two years of illness from a stroke. She was married to S J Hunt and they had lived in Denton for ten years. Funeral services will be held in Denton.
Workmen repair the South Main street school ahead of fall opening under City Manager Lyon. They fix drainage and flood issues by connecting the yard pipe to Main street, repaint woodwork, kalso mine walls, and install a hardwood front hall floor. Superintendent Marr attends Columbia University summer teachers course in New York.
Raleigh reports Will Black a 16 year old Negro is electrocuted in the state penitentiary for a capital offense against a six year old white child in Keene county. His father Joseph Black was killed by a mob in Greene county after the crime. Samuel Stocks remains at large on a 10000 bond for participating in the lynching. trial set next week in Kenansville after investigation and removal to Duplin.
