12 Year Old Wins Soap Box Derby in High Point

James Brian Hicks nicknamed Chip clinched the High Point Soap Box Derby title in a field of 27 entries. The Jamestown junior high student won Class B with an undefeated run through 50 double elimination heats and collected a $500 savings bond a trophy and a trip to Akron to race in the All American Derby.

Randolph County advances four laning of U S 64 and four laning plans for U S 311 and U S 421. The U S 220 bypass extension from North Asheboro to Level Cross progresses. Weather observers forecast partly cloudy skies and a 20 percent chance of showers. Highs in the 90s with lows in the 60s, mainly breezy southeast winds. thundershowers expected Monday in the High Point area with stronger winds.

Weather Forecast For South and North Carolina Regions

Partly cloudy conditions continue across South and North Carolina through Monday with a chance of afternoon thunder. Showers are possible in the northeast, with warmer, humid settings and scattered thundershowers Sunday. Lows Sunday night range from upper 50s to low 60s in mountains, otherwise mid 90s elsewhere. Mon highs reach upper 60s to low 70s inland, with south coast hot and partly cloudy and possible thunderstorms.

Springs Traveling Art Show at Clemson Lee Gallery

The 11th Annual Springs Traveling Art Show features works by North and South Carolina artists and will be exhibited in Clemson University's Rudolph Lee Gallery from August 1 to 28. The 38 works were chosen from 690 entries in a 1959 Springs Mills invitational. The gallery hours are 9 am to 5 pm weekdays and 2 to 6 pm weekends.

Reading Club Whets Appetites at YWCA High Point Library

A group of 12 to 15 year old girls from the YWCA High Point Public Library summer reading club read titles like To Kill a Mockingbird and The Scarlet Letter. They met twice weekly with staff, swam as an incentive, and ended with a tour and poster prizes. After the five week program they planned to continue weekly informal meetings at the library for the rest of the summer.

Six men were named to direct United Appeal divisions led by Fr Sizemore general campaign chairman. They include ak Wood George T. Sons. Slack Heritage Industrial U. Gray High Point Hardware Commercial. Spence High Point Bank Trust Co. Pearce North Carolina National Bank Metropolitan. Coffield Simpson Coffield Insurance Public Services. Slack will be helped by Ralph Gurley. The group toured Salvation Army Boys Club YWCA and a kindergarten for retarded children to study needs. A planning session next Thursday will set division goals and campaign calendar.

Sunday Night Under the Stars Worship Series Opens

The citywide event begins Sunday July 26 at 7 30 p m in Albion Millis Stadium. Twenty High Point churches sponsor five weekly services with a 100 voice choir directed by Marion Boling. Dr E W Price of Green Street Baptist Church will speak at the first service. Public is invited.

Tax funds Target Schools In Guilford County Budget

Guilford County will allocate about 60 percent of its $26.7 million current year budget to schools led by public schools and Guilford Technical Institute. The schools receive $9.74 million, while the Social Service Department gets $8.17 million and the General Fund costs $4.90 million. Health services total $3.14 million with $1.73 million aid. Local taxes total $14.09 million of the budget with $6.02 million from federal and state aid. The 84 cent tax rate applies to a property valuation from the previous year.
