American divisions reinforced Korea as the 25th and First Cavalry reported landings and continued pressure on Taejon. Allied air strikes struck Red concentrations near Nonsan while U S defenses held.
President Truman asked Congress for a 10 billion dollar program to supply men and materiel for Korea and to guard against aggression elsewhere. He called for partial home front mobilization, higher taxes, and lifting legal limits on armed forces while promising no price controls yet. He outlined steps to curb inflation, prioritize defense materials, and tighten credit, with a tax program to be presented later.
A United Nations Balkan committee warned that the Russian led Cominform may plan an attack on Greece. The panel cited propaganda claims as possibly a cover for invasion plans while noting tensions with Yugoslavia and the Athens Belgrade axis reference.
Washington reports about 2.5 million National Guard and reserves subject to call under Defense Secretary Johnson. Only a small portion are fully trained or organized. The House moved to pass and rush to the White House a foreign arms bill authorizing 1.2225 billion dollars to aid free nations against Communist aggression. It backs second-year spending for Western Europe and NATO, Greece Turkey Iran, Korea Philippines, and the broader China area.
Senate Republicans demand a nonpartisan commission to investigate McCarthy's Communists in government charges. Senator Lodge says GOP senators will urge the foreign relations committee to return the Democrats’ report labeling McCarthy’s charges a fraud and hoax.

Panic struck Messina Sicily as a violent tremor shook the area driving residents to flee. Reports reached the Italian mainland across the straits with no damage reported. The 1908 Messina quake killed about 75 000 people in a historic disaster.
In Chicago a Roman Catholic priest, Rev Kevin Conway 31 of Afton Missouri, mistaken for a burglar, was killed by a homeowner's shots while escorting a woman home. Suspect Charles Kasper 30 said his wife woke him. he fired after hearing noises. The priest was visiting his mother.
Washington lawmakers voiced broad support for President Truman's Korea crisis program. House Speaker Rayburn said a military and economic bill would be introduced today with aims to pass next week. Leaders argued for rapid approval of wartime spending and powers, while calling for some cuts in nonessential federal outlays.
U S infantry divisions arrive in Korea as a rapid push is postponed. The 24th division fights to hold Taejon after a retreat from the Kum River while the 19th regiment sacrifices to slow North Korean advances. Allied engineers widen air bridges and plan greater air support from Korean bases with more planes expected soon.
