High Point Hosts 101st Superior Court Opening
NCSC 101 charges and spar e no effort in an investigation. IGH POINT is pleased to have as its guests today the governor, several judges, a sprinkling of candidates for office and a group of miscellaneous celebrities. The opening of the 101st seat of superior court in North Carolina gains prestige by their presence. A court, like a ship, should be launched with a bit of ceremony. We appreciate their assistance in getting NCSC 101 off to a good start. The truth is we need a good start and follow up to make this experiment in holding Superior Court outside the county a success. There are opposition voices who do not want High Point sessions to succeed, and others who are skeptical or concerned about added expense. Most in High Point believe the experiment is justified and deserved. Though not a county seat, High Point is larger than 93 percent of the county seats and offers convenience to locals and businesses. Yet costs and convenience for county residents deserve consideration, and if the new facility fails to justify continuation, future legislatures may abolish it. High Point sessions will benefit local lawyers and may affect Greensboro fees. The success or failure depends primarily on the High Point Bar. The Enterprise notes Governor Broughton’s claim that newspaper criticism of public officials is a healthy part of democracy and commends his candor. Former Police Captain Jesse House withdrew his appeal to the High Point Civil Service Commission, alleging a frame-up by enemies on the police force. He has a right to withdraw, but the city should investigate such charges from a former senior officer. The city has much at stake to ensure integrity in the police force and to consider cleaning house if needed.
