OPA food control idea moves toward universal rationing
Washington reports a push by professors and Prentiss Brown to extend government control of the larder. The plan mirrors Britain by buying and selling to favored distributors, risking huge debt. Objections cite foreign protests and risk to taxes, while promoting steadier living costs. A related memo seeks sugar rationing on imports amid war bans. Colonel Truman Smith rises to top due to aerial power’s role in the war, with ties to Berlin and Lindbergh era diplomacy.
