Newport News Prepares For Nation's All-Out War

Mary Louise Medley paints Newport News as a mobilizing port city with shipyards, railways, and harbor defenses expanding rapidly. Thousands of workers flood the gates, identification badges adorn workers, and housing rises as antisubmarine patrols, camouflage ships, and Navy men shape a wartime panorama along the James River. The scene includes the Victory Arch, USO Center, and a transient blend of sailors, marines, and recruits in a bustling wartime massif.
