Dave Marcis drove the Penske Racing Team Chevrolet to a one second win in the Norton 200 at Michigan International Speedway. Marcis said the car finished fastest and hoped to run more Grand National races, praising Roger Penske’s professional organization.
Canadian driver Don Biedermann surged from 11th to lead on lap 213 to win the 84 mile Oxford 250 at Oxford Plains Speedway. Bob Pressley led most of the race until refueling relegated him to fourth. Sumner McKnight of Newport Beach wins the Roseville NASCAR Winston Western Grand National race at All American Speedway after passing Ernie Stierly late in the 100-lap event. McKnight outsprints Stierly on the 95th circuit for his first NASCAR victory, while Chuck Bown battles power losses and Cautions.
Darrell Waltrip of Franklin Tennessee led late and beat Richard Petty by about 40 seconds in the Nashville 420 Grand National race. Bobby Allison finished third as heat took a toll on drivers and cars at Nashville Speedway. Waltrip earned 6600 of the 62000 purse while indicating the race may be last at the five-eighths mile oval before a superspeedway opens next summer.
West driver on page 38 recounts crash from a year prior. High Point's Gary Craven, hydro division points leader, was defeated on his penultimate run. He blamed a broken clutch as he left the line but kept the overall point lead in his division.
The Pond Giants of Winston-Salem meet the Greensboro Knights Friday in the winner’s bracket of the Roxboro Invitational. Both teams enter 2-0 after the Giants shut out the Johnston County All-Stars 7-0 Sunday.
Eddie Stanky, former major league player and manager, faced additional tests in Arlington Texas after a weekend collapse during an oldtimers game. Officials reported he is in improved condition and resting. His son Mike Stanky said doctors ruled out heart problems as the cause.
