North Carolina polio cases reached 679 with 23 new infections, marking the second worst epidemic in state history behind 1944. Guilford County remains a high incidence area as health officials note the continuing spread and timeline for reporting.
In New York on July 17 Assistant Medical Examiner Charles H Hochman said a Bronx hospital patient, Finnie Engelke 36 of Brooklyn, died after a bronchoscope inserted to examine her lungs touched her chin resting on the metal collar of an artificial lung powered by a 110 horsepower AC motor and a 220 volt DC motor. Police Lt John Drake said the incident occurred at Montefiore Hospital where the patient was connected to the artificial lung.

Veterans of American wars paid informal farewell to General John J. Pershing at Walter Reed hospital where he died on Thursday.
