Chief Highway Engineer Fired After Disputes

RALEIGH AP Transportation Secretary Jake Alexander fired Chief Highway Engineer John H. Davis after months of bickering between the State Transportation Board and the highway division staff. Davis, with 30 years at the department and eligible for retirement, was given the option to resign but refused. Alexander cited embarrassment to the Holfhouser administration and highlighted a roadside mowing delay and unmet maintenance funding as key issues. Henry C. Clegg Jr. will serve as temporary chief engineer.
