San Francisco and Oakland see mass walkouts as 100000 union workers join the general strike. California National Guard mobilizes, streetcars halt, and relief measures begin as authorities seek mediation and maintain order amid widespread disruption.
In Havana on July 17 the Cuban government seized a hidden small arsenal from a building that once housed the US legation. American ambassador Jefferson Caffery gave the weapons to Cuban authorities after Col. Fulgencio Batista informed them of the cache.
Raleigh officials report the State highway and public works commission approved bids for rebuilding three Charlotte streets and one in Hendersonville. Proposals go to Washington for federal approval to begin construction.
Warsaw reports about fifty people drowned as floods rise in southern Poland after inundating large parts of Cracow district. Rescue efforts continue as waters threaten nearby communities and authorities assess damage.
President Roosevelt signed an executive order directing the Postmaster General to investigate foreign air mail and ocean mail contracts made before June 16 1983. The inquiry will assess possible modifications or cancellations of those contracts and report recommendations.
Leroy Parmelee pitched and batted the New York Giants to a 5 to 0 victory over the Chicago Cubs. He held the Cubs to seven hits and hit a grand slam in the game, driving in all five runs.
On June 30 one North Carolina bank left the temporary federal insurance fund among 21 nationwide. Hickory Industrial Bank in Hickory announced withdrawal as the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation chairman Leo T. Crowley reported the figures.
Four candidates who ran in the June 30 Democratic primary must file final expense accounts with Secretary of State Stacey Wade by midnight Friday. None had filed by today. Contests decided in the third congressional, seventh and seventeenth judicial districts.

Huntsville Alabama July 17 strikers stormed the Fletcher cotton mill as a statewide walkout were called and forced it to close. Armed deputies rushed the scene but the plant shut down. Mills at Anniston Florence Jasper and Cordova joined the shutdown bringing employment losses to more than 13000. No further trouble was reported beyond the initial incident.
Governor Floyd B Olson calls out the National Guard after Minneapolis truck drivers strike. Adjutant General Ellard A Walsh orders one battalion of the 161st Field Artillery to the Minneapolis armory awaiting orders. no violence reported at that time.
Kosciusko Mississippi July 17 labor strife flaring anew in Kosciusko's textile mill center with continued coverage noted on page seven.

Hartd sale New York troopers locate 21 month old Robert Connor behind the family home. The boy, with facial cuts from brambles, is brought to his mother who faints, then regains consciousness as doctors attend. Police hunted across five states after the child disappeared during a Thursday afternoon play session.
A Tokyo report says North Carolina cigarettes are being pushed off in Japan as Virginia leaf tobacco grows in use. The Japanese monopoly restricts sales by not maintaining stocks, causing several US brands to vanish briefly while fresh supply arrives.

The group includes W C Ward N A Barber and Roy Penny with union official P R Chri stopher. mill management was expected to send three representatives.
Former Cuban President Gerardo Machado, pursued by extradition papers, arrives in the Dominican Republic aboard the Boreas after a voyage from the United States. Captain Scott reveals Machado, a frightened fugitive, promised wealth in exchange for safe passage, with a rifles and ammo cache found aboard.
