Escaped convict nabbed after Raleigh teen gives ride
In Raleigh an escaped convict posing as a man with a sick daughter persuaded 17-year-old James Giles to drive him to Durham. Giles, who stopped near tears at the tale, alerted police upon return and the fugitive Ralph E. Pitts, 29, of Durham, was captured. Pitts had fled a prison truck during a work detail from Central Prison.

Bomb plot nets five year sentence for Rich in Morganton
David Rich, 25, received a five year term after pleading guilty to dynamiting a power transformer at the Great Lakes Carbon Corp plant in Morganton. Four co defendants including Robert Sisk and Manley Harrison had cases continued to August. An ICWU strike had just ended days earlier. Agent Vanderford testified Rich admitted the bomb was made in the union hall.
