Steel and CIO Agree on Thirteen Cent Increase
Pittsburgh July 16 The U S Steel Corp and the CIO United Steelworkers agreed to a pay raise averaging 18 cents an hour, with the firm saying higher labor costs force price hikes. Reports had circulated of an 8 to 18 percent rise for about 300,000 workers, equating to roughly 12 cents more per hour from the current $1.55 rate. Last April the workers under a two year no strike pact asked for a large raise.

Chicago July 16 The annual summer furniture show neared its final sessions with many exhibitors expressing disappointment over sales. A spokesman said the market was disappointing to many exhibitors noting five years of slow conditions and a six month business decline. Poor quality and overpriced merchandise failed to move while inventory remained high. Only well styled goods of better quality in the medium and higher price range attracted orders. There was a sufficiently large demand for such items.
