The program grants federal employment preference to most cold war veterans on par with earlier conflicts. Eligible veterans receive five point scores, with ten points for those wounded, service-connected disabled, or receiving related benefits. North Carolina leaders unveil a plan for a common trunk east west highway linking Wilmington to Biscoe and connecting to Charlotte Greensboro and Statesville. The six to eight lane expressway would reuse existing routes and avoid separate Wilmington to Charlotte and Wilmington to Greensboro highways. The plan includes a Biscoe hub with interstates 85 40 and 220 and notes a nearby Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel project could be funded with outside money.
Miss Corazon Amarao, 23, the sole survivor of the eight nurse massacre, is kept in seclusion at South Chicago Community Hospital as police seek her help. A $10,000 hospital reward funds memorials for the victims and aids nurse training.
AP reports a killer murdered eight people including Suzanne Farris and Gloria Davy. Police found the bodies with Patrolman Kelly first on the scene in a case described as brutal and senseless. Friends and neighbors recall the victims as caring volunteers and promising young women.
