ITU Penalized For Failure To End Strike
The War Labor Board suspended consideration of all pending voluntary newspaper contracts with the ITU AFL after the union refused to end walkouts at The Jersey Journal in Jersey City and the Bayonne Times. The board warned that future voluntary agreements may be treated as disputes and judged accordingly, citing wartime public policy and union challenges to government authority. The decision affects related cases in Chicago and signals broader scrutiny of wage and retroactivity issues.
