A massive blackout hit New York City after a lightning strike, halting subways and stock markets. Beame declared a state of emergency and ordered a probe while Con Edison worked to restore power, with looting and injuries reported across boroughs through the night.
New York faced a blackout affecting ten million people on a hot humid evening. Con Edison blamed an electrical storm and transformer explosion for damage to transmission lines but offered no explanation for failure of lightning protection devices. Autopsies were noted as continuing.
