Defense Spending Down Under McNamara Plan
Secretary of Defense Robert McNamara announced that fiscal 1965 defense outlays fell to 47.5 billion, a drop of 3.75 billion from forecasts. He credited the cost reduction program with saving 4.6 billion last year, aiming for 6.1 billion annually by 1969, while preserving military strength. The plan includes buying only needed items, seeking low prices, and reducing operating costs through consolidation. The base-closing effort saved 483 million in 1965.
