OPA Hints Of Increases In Sugar Rations
Washington July 13 A possible sugar ration increase is hinted as OPA notes United States imports exceed consumption by about 30 000 tons monthly Yet continued government control is needed to ensure fair shares and prevent shortages for 1943 Shipping remains uncertain and 1942 production plus imports may total 6 054 284 tons versus normal peacetime use of 6 800 000 Tons left in reserve could be as low as 354 000 tons if supply remains steady but rationing may tighten if warfare reduces imports or yields fall The basic ration is one half pound per person per week with a two pound bonus recently authorized Most supply comes from Cuba and Puerto Rico as long as import rates hold steady the sugar situation is sound for now If imports drop the rationing system will be tightened
