Food Prices Continue Rise Across Nation
Washington reports a broad rise in retail food prices from mid May to mid June, pushing housewife shopping costs 13.3 percent above prewar levels. Increases hit pork, lamb, lard, eggs, onions, potatoes, and apples, with pork chops and bacon up over 30 percent and lard up 40 percent from a year earlier. Butter evaporated milk sugar beans cabbage bananas and green beans rose 10 to 34 percent. cereals and some fresh produce declined. The Bureau expects further gains in mid June to mid July.
