The Democratic National Committee announces a new pocket sized monthly magazine titled Democratic Digest to be placed on newsstands for public sale. The first issue features President Eisenhower on the cover in four colors.
The United States offered 15 million dollars worth of food for East Germany through Soviet authorities. Premier Otto Grotewohl rejected it calling the move a provocation. Molotov and Olotov notes blamed the West for June 17 riots and accused U S officials of propaganda and mercenary violence in Berlin. The White House said the offer still stands despite Soviet rejection.
Eight new polio cases bring the year’s total for Caldwell and Catawba to 147 with three deaths this week. Catawba reports 42 cases and Caldwell 105 as health officials push mass immunization for over 14 000 children and prepare four clinics for a three day operation.

A. I. Ferree of Asheboro stated Rep Harold D. Cooley of Nashville crossed into politics with a Siler City July 4 address supporting a bi partisan foreign policy. Ferree said Cooley could have backed non partisan NC Supreme Court a non partisan school board and a non partisan highway commission.
The Methodist Summer Assembly at Lake Junaluska N C features a world peace crusade and two South-wide leadership conferences. Rev John A Lowder of Weaverville will chair the Crusade for World Order, Tuesday through Thursday, under the Western North Carolina Methodist Conference. He serves as treasurer for the conference committee and stands in for Rev John H Carper of Gastonia, away on a reserve Navy chaplain tour.
John L. Stickley of Charlotte North Carolina led two other nominees to win the third vice presidency at the 36th annual Lions Clubs convention in Chicago. A Dodge of Detroit became president with Monroe L. Nute of Kennett Square Pennsylvania rising to first vice president. Humberto Valenzuela of Santiago Chile moved from third to second vice president.
President Eisenhower ordered that fathers be subject to the draft unless they prove fatherhood before August 25 1953 or show extreme hardship. Fathers already deferred remain exempt while registrants without fatherhood deferment must prove paternity or pregnancy by that date. The White House says the move corrects serious inequity as boards resist new exemptions and quotas compel earlier call ups.
RALEIGH July 11 Alton A Lennon newly named senator said he will travel to Washington next week to present credentials to the secretary of the Senate. Lennon said he will follow a middle course in policy and support the existing farm price support program until changes improve North Carolina’s position. he stressed he will vote in the Senate to reflect the people’s will.

Bohlen flew in for urgent Kremlin talks as Beria's purge dominates the agenda. Two three power working groups were formed to draft options for Monday.
