Bank Clerk Swims Across English Channel
Pierre Van Vooren, a 31 year old French bank clerk, swam the English Channel in 17 hours 56 minutes arriving ashore near Calais at 3 35 a m. Channel Swimming Association observer Dick Powell noted the voyage was very rough and credited Van Vooren’s determination. Van Vooren had a week’s holiday and took the chance to attempt the swim, with his wife Ghislaine and their two year old son awaiting him. Two years earlier he swam from France to England in 15 hours 19 minutes becoming the first Belgian to conquer the channel both ways.
