Tobacco Outlook Rosy Before Heavy June Rains
North Carolina flue-cured tobacco production was forecast at 856.7 million pounds as of July 1, with record yields in the Old Middle and Border Belts driving gains. Excessive rains in late June and early July reduced prospects in the Eastern Belt, yet total acreage reached about 485,000 acres, 22,000 more than 1961. U.S. production is estimated at 2.141 billion pounds, with barley tobacco at 610 million and apples and peaches also projected higher.
