The GOP platform attacks the Truman administration as corrupt and graft prone while backing a strong defense, foreign policy, and civil rights stance. It vows to end corruption, oust grafters, and restore honest government, with Taft and Eisenhower backing the foreign policy and defense planks.
Chicago delegates move to fast track a Civil Rights plank designed to bridge Northern and Southern Republicans. The compromise limits federal action to ending discrimination in employment and nondiscrimination in federal appointments while avoiding a strong national enforcement body and drops the 1948 armed services provision.
General Dwight D. Eisenhower leads in first ballot votes with 532 to Taft's 497 as balloting nears at the GOP convention. A stop Taft coalition controls the floor while Warren Stassen and McKeldin pledge in to Ike. A new platform promises peace, security, civil rights limits, and tax cuts as delegates clash over Texas Georgia contests.
General Dwight Eisenhower told the North Carolina delegation he would campaign in the South if nominated. Mrs. Eisenhower joined the Tar Heels for the first time, with page Jerry Kent from Le Noir, N C, handling carnations backstage. J Bates Gerald of South Carolina is Taft’s leading accepted man for the nomination and praises Herbert Hoover as a top American, urging adherence to Hoover’s Taft recommendation.

The Presbyterian Men's Council and the Sunday School Superintendents' Council met at Montreat today as the first of four conferences this week. They prepare for the full Men’s Conference and Sunday School Supervisors Conference set to begin tomorrow and run through Sunday.
Dr. Paul D. Sanders editor of the Southern Planter told a Greensboro gathering of Negro farmers and homemakers that only about 15 percent of Americans farm, while the non farm population grows, calling for preparation to feed the expanding urban base.
Applications for the $12 000 a year job of Director of Internal Revenue in Greensboro are now due July 14, the Civil Service Commission says. The deadline was moved from June 30 because applicants were fewer than expected. A spokesman would not disclose the number of applications received.
Directors and stockholders of the North Carolina Railroad Co meet today to elect officers and directors. The state holds controlling stock and the governor approves the slate, while private stockholders name a vice president and an assistant secretary treasurer. State Sen Ralph Scott of Burlington had served as president last year.
The North Carolina Traffic League elected new officers yesterday and voted to oppose proposed freight rate hikes by railroad and motor carriers. A. B. Fisher of Kannapolis, president of Cannon Mills Co., was chosen as league president. Herman Cone of Greensboro and H. V. Fleming of Charlotte were named vice president and secretary treasurer respectively.

General James A. Van Fleet is ordered to abandon routine duties and focus on fighting the Korean war. General Clark announces a new communications zone in Korea to support units south of the combat area, led by Major General Thomas W. Herren. Meanwhile UN forces report a renewed North Korean counterattack and losses on the eastern front, with Chinese forces pressing in the west near Panmunjom as Marines engage entrenched positions.

Panmunjom reports show United Nations and Communist delegates entering a second year of armistice talks with no accord on prisoner repatriation. The sole sticking point remains whether prisoners may refuse repatriation, amid a daytime air strike on a Communist mortar position and cautious UN comments on progress.

North Carolina delegates vote 16 to 10 against seating the pro Eisenhower delegation. Taft outlook improves on the first ballot as Virginia and Alabama alignments shift.
