Washington reports a record corn crop of 3,328,862,000 bushels and a wheat crop near 1,751,000,000 bushels, boosting home food supply and grain shipments. The large output supports meat production as breeders hold hogs for breeding and demand remains high, with prices at or near peak levels.
The state department of motor vehicles reports 479 motorists in North Carolina lost driving licenses last month due to drunken driving. Last year’s June figure was 509, and drunken driving convictions for 1948 total 4,053.

Louisburg North Carolina July 10 one of the worst fires in the town history destroyed the main plant of the South Atlantic Manufacturing company. Manager W M Sanderlin put the loss at 150000 dollars. The fire was found at 5 a m by night watchman Turner Matthews. The frame building stacked with kiln dried lumber was swept by flames. Losses included woodworking equipment used for pine sheathing and box lumber. Two box cars on a railroad siding were damaged and another lumber car was saved. The plant will be rebuilt and employs 140 people.

Berlin daily reports Soviet blockade tightens as Western leaves are canceled. American and British commanders suspend leaves in Berlin on July 10 to meet restricted travel and airlift needs. Western highway traffic to Berlin now requires Soviet permits and border searches.
A House subcommittee plans to cite nine CIO union officials for contempt of Congress over refusals to answer whether they are Communists. The move follows three days of hearings led by Rep. Charles J. Kersten. One union leader, Arthur Osman, was removed by U S marshals after protests amid testimony from Jack Altman denying Communist ties.
From Cairo the United Nations mediator Count Folke Bernadotte sailed from Rhodes with his wife Estelle Manville and aides to Lake Success to brief the Security Council on a new cease fire as fighting flared again in Palestine. The Egyptian defense ministry reported 325 Jewish soldiers killed or wounded last night.
Celanese Corp employees in Newark New Jersey voted 477 against and 329 for the CIO Textile Workers of America as their bargaining agent. 929 workers were eligible to vote. A conference at 2 p.m. Monday was set by Samuel Harris of district 50 United Mine Workers.

The document will contrast party differences with the Republican Congress, accusing the 89th Congress of wretched conduct. Brig. Gen. Christian F. Schilt and his Glenview Naval Air Base unit depart for Cherry Point maneuvers in North Carolina. The force includes 18 Corsair fighters and six transports carrying 17 officers and 25 men, with Schilt and a civilian reserve team aboard the four engine transport.
