Tyro Lutheran Church Among Oldest Congregations in Davidson

Lexington July 9. German Lutherans from Pennsylvania and Virginia settled in Davidson County as early as 1764. The Sandy Creek area and later St. Luke's Church evolved from Swicegood and Mary Cathron land deeds. Early buildings include a log church, a 36 by 24 foot frame chapel, and a 58 by 40 foot later structure costing about 1300 dollars. The 1880 expansion created an academy on land donated by R F Thompson and his mother, aiding local education, under church trustees.
