Reduced Tax Burden Falls Short of Advocates’ Claims

Washington reports that the 1925 tax law cut the public burden by about half of the $400 million target. Treasury figures show total internal revenue at $2,584,010,847 for 1925, down from $2,796,179,258 in 1924, with a six month reduction of $212,168,409. Officials expect further cuts in the next congress, with Senator Watson proposing at least $200 million in relief and debates over surtax levels from 13 to 25 percent led by Smoot and Green. The 1925 income tax yield was $1,761,681,641, a drop of $80,077,675 from 1924, suggesting more room for lower rates without crippling revenue.
