Meat Packers Struggle to Buy Cattle Under Price Law
Five weeks after a beef price rollback, major packers report difficulty buying cattle without breaking the law. Swift Armour and Wilson say cattle shipped to market are sold, with no major shortages at butcher shops. Smaller packers feel they can operate under the law, but big packers see high risk. Officials cite black market activity and uncertain trends, with future shipments expected to rise this summer as prices deter buyers and feeders. An OPS official notes uncertainty until Congress approves controls.
