Bowman Gray dies aboard ship at 61
Bowman Gray chairman of the board of R. J. Reynolds Tobacco died aboard a North Cape cruise after a heart attack. The Winston-Salem native, UNC alumnus of 1892, was 61 and had served Reynolds in roles from salesman to president during more than four decades. He was married to Nathalie F. Lyons and had two sons.

Canton July 8 Howell using a .22 rifle felled a 40 year old golden eagle at 450 yards. The bird weighed heavy with a seven foot wingspan. Howell noted the eagle had long prey history in Haywood area feeding on lambs and pigs.
