An unchanced bulletin from Marie Pressier’s bedside in Santa Barbara Calif notes the famed stage and screen star is critically ill. Attendants report a steady but almost imperceptible daily decline in strength as she remains under constant care.
Mrs. Franklin D. Roosevelt spoke at the University of Kentucky in Lexington about a future America where every citizen has a better chance for a better life. She urged education, selflessness, independence, and informed citizenship to strengthen democracy and address national and regional distress.
Harold D. Cooley of Nashville won a smashing Democratic victory over Hobart Brantley in North Carolina's fourth district special election to fill the late Edward Pou's term. With 97 of 152 precincts reporting, Cooley led 14 738 to 876, carrying Wake and Franklin counties and advancing to run for the full term in November. Cooley, educated at UNC and Yale and a Nashville lawyer, becomes the district's second representative since 1901.
Adolf Hitler leaves Berlin for a Bavarian retreat signaling a political truce to calm the nation. Subordinates who helped quell the revolt are resting. Von Papen may stay away from politics as police monitor the situation. The cabinet will not meet in July as the regime reassesses after executions and storm trooper reorganization.
The region saw cooling rains and brisk winds after a dire heat spell that caused multiple deaths and prostrations across states from New England to New York. Heat peaked with 137 in direct sun in Manhattan and 96 at Newark airport as drownings and lightning fatalities mounted, while southern areas enjoyed relief with cooler July temperatures in Omaha and elsewhere.
Settlement of the weeklong strike at the Goldberg cotton mills in Gastonia was announced by R R Lawrence president of the State Federation of Labor. The Clara Dunn Arm strong mills reopen Monday and Piedmont resumes when fire damage is fixed. The Clara mill had been closed nine weeks with other units idle after a sympathy walkout.
Six people died and many were wounded in daylong clashes between police and unemployed rioters in Amsterdam. Tanks and armored cars crushed barricades while gunfire swept the city amid protests over a municipal dole cut. Authorities noted Communist incitement and looting. riots spread from the Jordaan district to sixteen areas.
In Lakewood, a suburb, a nickel plate passenger train struck a sedan late today killing two women and injuring a man who died hours later. The victims were Vera Penack, 17, of Clairton, and Margaret Penack, 30, of Lakewood, with driver Mike dJennyo, 20, of Lakewood, dying at the hospital.
Clem Shaver of Fairmont filed notice of candidacy for the Democratic nomination for United States senator. He serves as assistant to the chairman of the Reconstruction Finance Corporation. The announcement was made in Charleston on July 7.
Mrs Jule Pritchard aged 25 was found shot at her home in Lenoir. Her husband a 27 year old furniture worker was arrested and charged with her murder. A preliminary hearing was scheduled for July 17.
North Carolina shows mostly cloudy skies with cooler air and local thunder showers in the east, with generally fair conditions on Sunday and Monday. South Carolina expects similar unsettled weather with thundershowers mainly in the east and northwest drier areas, then generally fair. Washington Weather Bureau records summarize temperature and rainfall for the last 24 hours ending at 8 PM in cotton growing regions and surrounding areas.

In North Carolina, Duke University President W P Few plans to speak at Duke Day in Junaluska tomorrow before hundreds of alumni.

Jackson Michigan July 7 Republicans Henry P Fletcher and Arthur H Vandenberg accuse the Democratic administration of emasculating the constitution and creating a bureaucracy and debt through New Deal policies. Hanford MacNider says the constitution is being undermined as Republicans rally for a back to the constitution theme. They fault currency tampering and expansion of government control over industry and agriculture.
The United States national labor board ends operations with a record of settling over 80 percent of disputes under its jurisdiction. It notes that more than 2,000,000 workers were directly affected and about 1,800,000 returned to work or had disputes resolved.
James A. Moffett takes over as Housing administrator and pledges rapid start for home modernization and repair. He envisions 500 million dollars for renovations by fall and up to 56 million men employed nationwide. Government backs up to 20 percent of private loans with mortgage insurance to back new construction and refinancings.
