Summer Care for Better Lawns From The Home Gardener

Summer is the hardest time for lawns and regular care keeps grass growing. Adjust mowing height with heat, avoid cutting in direct sun, and never remove more than a third of leaf area. Raise height on uneven ground, check settings with a ruler, and use 2 to 2 1/2 inches in summer. Water deeply, at least an inch, to four inches deep soil, and fertilize with non burning plant foods to deepen roots. Let clippings lie to mulch, edge borders, and use reel or rotary mowers appropriately. Use safe practices, sharpen blades, and seek local garden center advice for disease and insect controls and tailored solutions.
