The Summer Furniture Market in High Point sees record advance registrations with about 5 000 buyers by mail and 5 500 expected in person as the show runs through July 17 indicating strong business for the cot pa furniture industry in late 1957.
Independence Missouri July 6 The Harry S Truman Memorial Library was dedicated by Chief Justice Earl Warren as an American service institution. Presidents Eisenhower Hoover and Truman himself attended praising the 3 5 million documents and mementos stored for public study and use. Warren said the library offers a path for future generations by making Truman’s papers available.
Pinkie Littlejohn died at 65 after a long career in the Associated Press and Southern newspapers. Born in Gaffney South Carolina he studied at The Citadel and served in the Charleston Light Dragoons in Mexico and World War I. He worked in Columbia Raleigh Charlotte and finally returned to Charleston after retiring in April.
A military court of inquiry at Camp Lejeune cleared Private Gilorma Romagnola of Buffalo of wrongdoing in the death of a prisoner. The court, similar to a civilian grand jury, absolved Pic. John T. Dye of the 2nd Marine Division. General A. R. Brunelli approved the findings. Romagnola, awaiting his fourth court martial, was attempting to escape while being escorted to the brig. He was the son of Mr and Mrs James A Niagara.
Senator Knowland warned the civil rights bill debate could stall all administration legislation for eight weeks or more. Senator Russell pledged exhaustive floor opposition aiming to rewrite or kill the House-passed measure, with a potential September continued session.
