Retroactive Tax Relief Bill Is Beaten in Senate Fight

The Senate faced a heavy workload as tax revision bills were debated to aid reconversion. The House approved a business aid measure 245 to 91, while the Senate rejected a plan to cut excess profits taxes retroactively by 235 million dollars. The bill would raise the excess profits exemption from 10 000 to 25 000 for next January 1, reducing next year payments by about 169 million dollars. Proponents say no tax-rate changes on individuals or corporations and claim the revisions improve business cash flow, though opponents argue it mainly benefits firms with war profits.

Drastic Changes In Pullman Travel As Result Of Redeployment Of Soldiers

Mounting complaints over troops redeployed riding day coaches on long transcontinental trips may trigger further civilian rail travel restrictions. An ODT spokesman warned action could follow if the order to shift sleeping cars from civilian to military use is not enough. The sleeping car service for civilian travel between cities 450 miles apart will end at noon July 15. The previous week ODT cut civilian train reservations from 30 to 5 days to speed troop movement from Europe. Soldiers complained of long day coach journeys while German and Italian prisoners rode Pullmans. Army officials said German prisoners were psychiatric patients en route to a New York hospital and Italian prisoners in Pullman cars are sick or disabled awaiting repatriation. Col. J. Monroe Johnson, director of the Office of Defense Transportation, commented.
