Bond dealers credit the appeal to safety and attractive yields during the 1930s market downturn.

The market fell next to last week with the Dow Jones average closing at 871.79 on Thursday, down 1.33 from the prior week, and the Associated Press average at 282.0 down 1.8. The market was closed Friday for the Fourth of July, municipalities defaulted on obligations but mostly repaid debts. Senate Banking data show over 181 billion dollars in tax exempt bonds outstanding nationally as of 1973, about 47 billion owned by individuals, a growth driven by lawyers, doctors, dentists and wealthy individuals avoiding stock tips.
