Massive fuel blaze sparks weeklong waterfront fire in Norfolk
Fire crews began mop up after a lightning strike ignited a 55 000 gallon gasoline tank near Norfolk's waterfront. The blaze threatened adjacent tanks and buildings as flames rose hundreds of feet. No injuries were reported. The tank held just under 70 000 gallons at ignition and melted its wall from 48 to 18 feet high. Esso San Francisco had been unloading at the pier but was moved away when the fire started.

Traffic Death Toll From Fourth of July Holiday

Chain Reaction Wreck Kills Three on July Fourth
A chain reaction crash on July 4 killed three people and raised North Carolina highway deaths to 784 this year. Laura Carpenting 41 of Morganton died after a five car crash on NC 18 near Fallston. Della Howard 61 of Lawndale and Michael Lee Sloan 16 of Shelby were later reported dead in related crashes. Two Greenville residents Pete Dudley 44 and Eunice Clarke Williams 49 also died in a separate multi fatality wreck. Other victims included James F. Freeman 44 of Brooklyn David Lee Sherrill 15 of Denver and William Hubert Cross Jr. 53 of Sanford.
