Algerian Rebels Take Two Trappist Monks From Thibarine
A five man rebel group in French uniform entered the Thibarine Monastery near Algiers and abducted Father Superior and two other monks after visiting with them. A dozen accompanying fighters joined as the group fled into the Atlas mountains. The French army, twelve hours behind, pursued in rugged terrain but found little. The monks had long served the poor Moslem population and had refused protection from a French garrison. The motive for the abduction remains unclear. Meanwhile Greenland remains largely glacier covered with over 80 percent of its 7 518 square miles.
