A United Press tally shows at least 423 deaths from traffic crashes and fireworks during the Independence Day weekend. The surge followed an earlier Safety Council revision and included fatal crashes in Kentucky and South Dakota, plus injury totals from fireworks mishaps.
The House Commerce Committee opened an inquiry into gasoline and oil price increases with four major oil companies summoned to testify over charges of collusion. Chair Charles A. Wolverton demanded explanations for price rises despite oil surpluses and looming competition. Representatives from Phillips Petroleum, Socony Vacuum, Esso, and Standard Oil of California are set to testify.
North Carolina saw twelve violent deaths during the Independence Day weekend as highways brimmed with traffic. Eight fatalities occurred in crashes while patrols pressed 24 hour duty to curb tolls.
Violent thunderstorms and roaring winds lash the Midwest killing at least three people and injuring many more. Dubuque records 2.95 inches in 15 minutes while lightning strikes cause a series of explosions and a large evacuation. Fatalities include Hugh Kinman near Guthrie Center and Raymond Jameson near West Liberty as storms disrupt Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, and South Carolina communities.
A state trooper, Pvt. Manley Stampler, stopped former President Truman on the Pennsylvania Turnpike near Everett after a risky driving pass. He warned Truman for safety and the ex-president apologized, saying he was sorry. The Trumans were en route to Independence, Missouri from Ohio.
Caldwell County begins mass polio inoculations for 10 800 children with 300 volunteers and staff from Greensboro as four clinics operate in Lenoir Granite Falls and Whitney. First recipient Claude Conrad Story aged seven endures the needle for the Guilford County candy drive.
Gen Omar N Bradley announced he will become chairman of Bulova Research and Development Laboratories Inc after retiring as chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff on August 16. The Bulova subsidiary works on guided missiles and other Defense Department projects. He spoke at a news conference about defense goals and the U S need for wings, suggesting 200 may be the right number, and urged continuation of basic research in the Defense Department.
Greensboro dispatch reports Edward Hunter did not leave his bed during the July 4 holiday. A car plowed through his bedroom wall Saturday morning, sending him to a local hospital in fair condition. The driver, Glenn Basham, was released on a $200 bond.
Marion dispatch reports a hearing set in Polk County superior court on a petition demanding Sheriff Loyd Panther's removal for wilful misconduct. Judge J Will Press to hear arguments as the petition seeks suspension pending ouster trial, while the sheriff vows to contest the move.
In Manteo services will continue at the site of the first Protestant service in North America. Next Sunday's program focuses on Negroes with guest theologian Rev. Babylon Johnson, pastor of Mount Leaven African Methodist Episcopal Church in Elizabeth City.
George Biggers an 18 year old resident of Gastonia died here today from injuries suffered in a car crash Saturday night when the vehicle he rode in overturned on a highway near Gastonia.
Army officials report Pvt. Winifred D. Moore, 19, of Virginia Beach Va., confessed to shooting and killing a Fayetteville taxi driver and wounding another soldier last Tuesday night. Moore, in custody of CID, faces murder charges. no further confession details released.
The No Caro Superior Court Clerks Association held its annual meeting in Asheville naming W S Babcock president from Edgecombe County Kermit W Lawrence of Surry County elected first vice president and John Davis of Lenoir County named second vice president
Paul Worthy, 42, of Newport, Tenn, was bumped from behind while rounding a curve near Asheville. Worthy and Paul Worthy, 57, of Asheville, got out of their cars and the Asheville Worthy was charged with speeding and following too closely.
Rocky Mount area report states Robert Phillips a 20 year old Black man was killed when his car left the road and overturned five miles south of Scotland Neck in the early hours.
In Seoul the United States offered a face saving two point compromise to win Rhee's approval of a Korean armistice. Rhee rejected it and demands a post armistice political conference within 90 days to discuss unification. Robertson called talks cordial as anti truce demonstrations emerged outside the presidential mansion.
Berlin reports say East Germans vow blood for blood to avenge workers shot by Russian and Communist forces amid ongoing strikes and protests. Information Bureau West notes signs reading blood for blood and We will rise again across East Germany as Zeiss in Jena and other plants face walkouts over arrests and disputes.
President Eisenhower accepted the resignation of Dr. Robert L. Johnson as chief of the overseas information service. Johnson said doctors warned two months ago the strains of the post were too much. He had taken the post in February after leaving Temple University.

Chicago report shows fireworks deaths rose in 1953 with at least eight killed and hundreds injured despite stricter rules. incidents include youths losing limbs in Beloit and Auburn, a Willows explosion killing 15 year old Dudley Nolta, and blasts at Houston Fort Worth and Kansas City causing extensive damage and injuries.
