Baker Gives Petty Winning Edge In End

Daytona International star Buddy Baker says Richard Petty gained a half step, finishing less than three seconds ahead after the July Fourth Firecracker 400. Baker says his car went loose as the track slicked, and he would have changed to new left tires on the final pit stop. Petty and Pearson led late as Dave Marcis moved up, with Marcis hoping for a caution to aid victory but finishing third. Donnie Allison, pole winner, finished fifth, citing tire and handling issues hindered by looseness and a flat tire.
