RALEIGH July 5 The man who built NC State’s textile school from a two machine basement operation to a world leading institution has retired. Dr Thomas Nelson dean emeritus of the school of textiles announced his retirement at age 77. Born in Preston England he joined the faculty in 1901 becoming professor and head in 1906 and the first dean in 1924. The school graduated 275 in 1924, about a third of the nation’s 900 textile graduates. Nelson helped organize the Southern Textile Association in 1908 and authored many books advancing textile science.
