Democrats May Battle Over Committees Wagner Turns Down Request To Chairman
Senator Robert F. Wagner of New York declined the chairmanship of the platform making committee as Democrats weigh who will lead the resolutions subcommittee in Chicago before July 17. The convention itself must craft the platform and choose major panels, while battles brew over seating for fourth term delegates and southern demands on rules. Wagner skips the post to attend Bretton Woods conference, with the party awaiting a new chairman by week’s end. Vice President Wallace’s fate looms as Roosevelt hints at a possible ticket with Wallace if endorsed for a second term.
