In Detroit on the second day of a sanitation strike Mrs. Gribbs confronted picketers denying a sign claiming she wears mink. She argued her husband the mayor earns far more than the $35,000 salary of a city executive and noted the family finances.
Two hijackers, an American man and a Guatemalan woman, seized Braniff 707 en route from Monterrey to Lima then Buenos Aires. They demanded U.S. responsibility for takeoff, sought Algeria asylum, and held six crew with ransom already paid. Planes and authorities debated blocking departure as fuel dwindled.
