Death Comes To Original Diamond Dick
NORFOLK Neb July 3 4 This town s link with the glamorous days of the Wild West has been broken. Dr Richard Tanner 74 known as Diamond Dick to thousands who saw his remarkable marksmanship feats at Wild West circus performances before the turn of the century died last night. His death was partly due to a broken leg suffered when a chair slipped from under him at his home. He kept his identity secret for 15 years after he quit the circus ring to practice as a country doctor in northeast Nebraska. His fellow citizens learned of his past during a 1925 western rodeo parade when he appeared in buckskin. He denied being a wild west hero as in the Diamond Dick stories but his career began at 16 and he was highly proficient with rifle and pistol drawing him into the leading Wild West acts.
