Doubling Of Present Strength Of U S Army Seen As Likely

Washington July 4. Plans for a substantial increase in the size of the United States army perhaps to double its present strength were indicated by the general staff request for power to hold National Guardsmen and selective trainees in service and to use them beyond the Western Hemisphere if necessary. The present strength is about 1.4 million. with on duty forces and 900,000 trainees next year the land forces could near 4.8 million, the size aimed for in the initial expansion. Congressional reaction was hostile to granting the power, with critics opposing extending tours and using troops outside the hemisphere, and warning it could signal preparation for broader war involvement. The Selective Service Act currently fixes one year of service and bans nonhemispheric use except in American possessions.
